Dowell Commits to SFA

Senior receiver DeJour Dowell opted to verbally commit to the Lumberjacks program Monday and is now on schedule to rejoin old Pirates linebacker Fre’Zarian Harrison, a true freshman, in Nacogdoches.

Dowell (6-2, 196) certainly won’t be the last NCAA Division I to come out of Pittsburg. Sophomore Keontae Burns already has an offer from Southern Mississippi.

The Pirates are riding an opening two-game winning streak in District 7-4A Division II competition into a meeting Friday with Pleasant Grove in Texarkana. They have scored at least 55 points in their past two games and have not allowed more than 20 points in the same span.

Dowell leads the team in receiving with 563 yards and seven touchdowns on 35 catches. He’s averaging 80.4 yards per game and is first-year quarterback Jaylon Jimmerson’s support beam in the passing game.

Jimmerson, a sophomore, eclipsed 1,000 passing yards last week. About 55 percent of his yardage has gone Dowell’s way.

Dowell recorded 595 yards in 12 games last season as Pittsburg’s second-leading catcher. Damien Porter had 909 yards and moved on to Southeastern Oklahoma State, an NCAA Division II university.

Stephen F. Austin has largely weathered a top-heavy schedule for a 3-4 overall record to date. One loss came in the season-opener to NCAA Division I FBS member Texas Tech.

The Lumberjacks own a 2-3 Southland Conference record and are currently in a tie with McNeese State for sixth place in the league. Three of the team’s final four games will be against squads that are lower in the standings, including this week’s game at Incarnate Word.

Coached by Clint Conque, Stephen F. Austin last made the FCS playoffs his first season in 2014. The program has reached the postseason seven times in its history with a trip to the national championship game in 1989 as its pinnacle achievement.

Dowell, like all senior football players in high school with scholarship offers, will become eligible to sign with any school that wants him in February.
