PHS soccer team ends season

By Coach Jody Loewen

The boys soccer season ended in a close 1-0 loss against a tough Palestine team this last Friday. The team played hard and never gave up. This season has definitely been one I will never forget. Throughout everything, the kids have done an outstanding job representing the school and community. We have seven seniors named to the TASCO Academic All-State team, we have 4 seniors that are going to represent Pittsburg at the FCA All-Star game, we will have multiple players make All-District, All- Region, and All-State once they are announced. We have won more games in team history finishing with a combined record of 22-6-1. We advanced to the Regional QuarterFinals after beating Kilgore in the Area Round for the first time in School history. We scored 152 goals this season shattering the old record of 102, we had 129 assists, breaking the old record of 72. We did this while only giving up 18 goals all season long. Personal best by the Pirates were achieved this year as well. Giovanny Rojas broke the record for goals scored in a season. Giovanny had 41, the previous record was 27. Adair Verde also broke the previous record; he had 28 goals on the season. Giovanny Rojas and Elias Flores tied for the most assists in one season with 25 each. The previous record was 18. Jose Reyes broke the record for most shutouts in a season with 17. The previous record was 13. Victor Benites broke his own record for steals in a season with 303. Last year he held the record with 236. Elias Flores broke the record for goals scored in one game, he had 7. The previous record was 5. This also earned Elias Flores the MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week in the state of Texas. Overall, the Pirates did an outstanding job this season not only on the field but off the field as well. If you see any of these students please congratulate them on an outstanding job this season. I also want to thank our administration and teachers for being understanding and working with us this season. This was a team effort and I am grateful to be a part of this Pittsburg Family.
