Pirates Head to Austin for State Track Meet

It was 1965 and the Pittsburg Pirate Boys track team advanced to state in 2A. Mike McWatters, Jackie Seale, Bobby Johnson and Johnny Paul Richardson started out placing 4th in the 440 relay at state that year. With the Pirates advancing in other events inlcuding Pole Vault with Chet Pruitt taking 2nd, Jackie Seale taking 4th in the 100 yard dash and Barry Collins taking 5th in the mile relay; the Pirates were 18 points behind Sinton to win the state track and field meet that year. It all came down to the mile relay which the Pirates had to take 1st to win the state track meet, and they did. In 2015 the 1965 State Champion Pittsburg Pirate Track & Field team celebrated its 50th anniversary of that historic win. In recent years Kendall Wright would also snag Pittsburg State Championship Titles in the Long Jump in 2007 and the Triple Jump in 2007 & 2008.
This weekend Pittsburg will send six athletes to the 4A State Track & Field Meet to compete against eight other teams in the 4x200 meter relay and look to stamp their name in the history books. Team members include Jr. Keithlen Griffin, Jr. Keontae Burns, Soph. Cade Busch, Fr. Kentericus Williams, Fr. Kartrez Andrews and Jr. Jaylon Jimmerson. Other schools competing in the event are Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, Wichita Falls Hirschi, Dallas Carter, Waco Connally, Taylor, Midlothian Heritage, Sealy and Freeport Brazosport. Pittsburg had the fifth best overall time in the state regional meet with a time of 1:28:54. The fastest time was 1:27:57 by Pittsburgs district oppontent Liberty-Eylau. The Pirates will look to shave off 1 second on their time for their relay that will start at 1:25pm Saturday at the Univeristy of Texas at Austin.n.
